Earth & Ink has joined the Global Biodiversity Alliance (GBA), the international partnership led by President Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali to protect nature and fund its conservation.
Earth & Ink is a Guyanese platform for news, analysis and public information on biodiversity, the environment and sustainable development. It was founded by Joanna E. Simmons and Dr Haimwant Persaud and launched on 30 September 2026 at Herdmanston Lodge in Georgetown. Its reporting covers forests, biodiversity, climate resilience, land use, water systems and sustainable development.
Membership adds a communications and creative voice to the Alliance. Earth & Ink aims to make environmental information easier to find and understand, to connect community voices with international audiences, and to show Guyana’s part in the Alliance’s work.
Welcomed at the launch
Speaking at the launch, the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport, Charles Ramson Jr., said: “Our environment is an essential part of our culture and identity, and our artists, creators, storytellers and young people have an important role to play in helping Guyana and the world understand and appreciate the value of our natural heritage.”
Pradeepa Bholanath, Senior Director of Climate Change, welcomed Earth & Ink’s membership. “Guyana has shown that protecting our natural heritage and pursuing development can go hand in hand,” she said. “Through LCDS 2030, our forest conservation efforts, carbon markets, community initiatives and the Global Biodiversity Alliance, Guyana has demonstrated how the value of nature can be recognised while creating opportunities for our people and contributing to global climate and biodiversity goals.”
A growing alliance
Guyana launched the Global Biodiversity Alliance at a summit in Georgetown in July 2025. It has since grown from 17 founding members to 138, President Ali told the United Nations General Assembly in September.
The Alliance’s second conference and financing forum takes place in Georgetown on 30 and 31 October 2026, with a focus on attracting public and private investment to protect biodiversity. Details are in our events calendar.
